Babywearing Hoodie vs Babywearing Coat: Which Is Right for a UK Winter?
Updated 12 October 2026
If you carry your baby in a sling or carrier, you've probably wondered whether you need a special coat. Many mums ask if it's worth it for one or two winters. Here's an honest look at the options.
Option 1: Your own coat, open over the carrier
Free, but the front stays open and draughty, and zips rarely close over a baby.
Option 2: A babywearing coat
Warm and weatherproof versions exist, but they tend to be the most expensive option and are bulky to wear when you aren't carrying.
Option 3: A babywearing hoodie with a zip-in panel
A hoodie with an extra panel zips around you and your baby, then works as a normal hoodie later. It's lighter and easier to wear every day, and ideal for milder days, around the house or under an open coat on colder ones.
Important safety points
A babywearing garment covers you and your baby — it does not hold or support your baby. Always use a properly fitted sling or carrier underneath and follow its instructions.
- Keep your baby's face visible and nose and mouth clear at all times.
- Don't overdress your baby: the cover and your body heat add warmth, so thick snowsuits are usually unnecessary inside a carrier.
- Check your baby's temperature regularly at the back of the neck.
- Follow the T.I.C.K.S. guidelines for safe babywearing.
So which should you choose?
If you want something you'll wear long after your carrying days, a zip-in hoodie is usually the better value. If you walk long distances in heavy rain, a dedicated coat may suit you better.
